Why Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the science of life, literally. Ayur is life and Veda is science. Once we realise this, we realise that Ayurveda is forever. It can be incorporated to our daily lives, even in the midst of today’s deadline schedules.
All that Ayurveda recommends is to have a routine ‘that rises with the sun and ends with sun’. In other words, Ayurveda recommends ordering your life according to the clock of Nature. That is the key to a healthy and content life.
This is simple. According to Ayurveda, the time between 6 am and 10 am is dominated by Kapha energy, which means lethargy and laziness. So, it is for us to wake up the body and warm it up with exercises to get it ready for the day ahead.
From 10 am to 2 pm, Pitta energy takes over. This is when the body is fully active as the phase is dominated by the element of Fire. The digestive system of the body is fully in action during this period. This, in other words, is the time to have full meals. Also, support the body by having some basic physical movement, like taking a short walk after a full meal, to support the digestive process.
The body enters the Vata phase from 2 pm to 6 pm, which is related to mind being fully active and creative. Restrict the physical activities during this period and focus on enhancing mental strength.
The Kapha phase reasserts itself from 6 pm to 10 pm. So, it is time to slow down again, relax and spend quality time with family.
These are simple things that anyone can do to align oneself to the Universal clock and this can bring in a lot of difference in the way one prepares oneself to face the day. Ayurveda keeps renovating and reinventing itself, as it has done over many generations. It is left for us to open ourselves to the wonderful world of Ayurveda.
